Maximum Drawdown

Also known as: max drawdown, drawdown

Maximum drawdown is the largest decline from a peak to a subsequent trough — the headline risk number. It measures the pain you must survive to earn the return, and often matters more than return itself: a high-return strategy with an unbearable drawdown is, in practice, untradeable. Recovery math is brutal (−50% needs +100%).
