A REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust) owns income-producing property (offices, malls, warehouses) and trades on the exchange like a stock, paying out most of its rental income. It lets you own real estate in small, liquid amounts without becoming a landlord — but payouts and unit prices fluctuate.
